The Strange Ways of the Universe

Life, it seems, has a whimsical way of throwing curveballs our way, reminding us that no matter how meticulously we prepare, luck and chance often dance in ways we cannot predict. This truth became clear during my high school years participating with the Academic Decathlon—a contest that demands not just knowledge but an uncanny ability to adapt to the unexpected.

The Academic Decathlon: A Lesson in Preparation and Chance

Founded in the far-off days of 1968 and gaining notoriety across the nation in the early '80s, the Academic Decathlon is a formidable beast. Students face ten events—essay writing, interview, speech (a prepared speech as well as an impromptu one), hour-long multiple choice quizzes in art, economics, language and literature, math, music, science, and then one special subject that would take place in a type of "Quiz Bowl".

An Academic Decathlon team is comprised of six to nine members. Two "C" students, two "B" students, two "A" students, and then a potential "alternate" for each grade group.

I spent a lot of time, I mean, A LOT of time preparing for these competitions. I read the "Heart of Darkness" for the twelfth time. I learned about art from the Rococo period through neo-classism. I dug deep into our "special subject", the "History of Flight". I learned everything I could: thrust, drag, gravity, lift; Icarus and Daedelus; Sir George Cayley; and Otto Lilienthal.

I was very well-prepared. I aced every event that final day and then came the special quiz bowl.

All the contestants must be present for the quiz bowl. The moderator asks the same four questions to each of the student groups (meaning nine different sets of four questions). The two from the "A" group go last. I was in the "A" group and I was feeling confident as I knew the answer to question after question after question.

But then, when my turn came, every single question was about modern aircraft. I hadn't learned anything about contemporary aircraft so, in a panic, I just guessed.

I also got every single answer correct.

All those hours spent studying the History of Flight, to what purpose?

Embracing the Unpredictability of Life

We prepare for our goals with the fervor of a ship setting sail, yet the universe often throws us into uncharted waters. In my case, the very act of preparing had sharpened my critical thinking and creativity, allowing me to navigate this unexpected challenge with surprising ease.

An Artistic Journey: From Hobby to Career

Then there’s my artistic journey—another tale woven into the fabric of serendipity. Long ago, I made a living as an eBay seller of assembled jewelry bits as well as vintage clothing.

Art was a diversion, a playful sidestep in the grand tapestry of life. Somehow, though, this hobby morphed into my main source of income, altering my existence in ways I could scarcely have imagined.

What was remarkable was how chance encounters and opportunities aligned unexpectedly. I stumbled into digital collage, a medium I never intended to embrace professionally. I needed images to illustrate my blog. The detour became the journey.

The Universe Knows Best

Life is unpredictable. Whether it’s a quiz bowl or an unexpected art career, sometimes the Universe takes us on strange glorious detours.

These unforeseen twists and turns can teach us resilience, adaptability, and the importance of welcoming the unknown. So the next time you find yourself preparing for something monumental, remember: it may well be luck, chance, or a twist of fate that carries the day. Embrace it, for in the grand tapestry of existence, you never know where the path might lead you.
