As a mother, I witnessed the occasional temper tantrum, but fortunately for me, my children tended to be calm and reasonable. If I talked them through the events and their emotions, they would listen and respond accordingly. I believed in the power of granting them what autonomy I could as they grew and flourished.
As a partner, I've witnessed many temper tantrums, and, unfortunately for me, an adult male in the throes of a rage cycle can be neither reasoned with nor reasonable. The only safe response is to give the adult tantrum a wide berth and hope that, at some point in the near future, they would return to rationality.
The first time you witness a rage cycle from someone in your life, take it as the red flag that it is and get away and get out as soon as you can.
